To apply for a Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) in Canada, you must gather several specific documents to prove ownership and provide vessel details. According to Transport Canada requirements, the essential documents include:

  • Bill of Sale or Transfer Document: This is the primary proof of ownership and must include the purchase price, date, and seller information. For private sales in Ontario, you should also include provincial sales tax receipts.
  • Hull Identification Number (HIN): You must provide this unique 12-character code located on the boat transom. Correct reporting is critical to avoid application rejection.
  • Vessel Specifications: You need to provide a detailed description including the make, model, model year, length, hull material, and propulsion type (inboard or outboard).
  • Owner Identification: A copy of a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s licence, is required for verification.
  • Previous Documentation: If the vessel was previously licensed in another jurisdiction, you must submit the old licence number. For new boats, a manufacturer’s certificate may be required.
