What is the Recommended Mil Thickness for Marine Shrink Wrap Film in Ontario?
For boats stored in exposed yards throughout Ontario, we recommend a minimum film thickness of 7-mil to 9-mil. Selecting the appropriate gauge is vital for resisting heavy snow loads, ice accumulation, and wind-driven debris typical of our local winters.
While smaller craft in sheltered locations may be adequately protected by 5-mil to 6-mil film, we never advise going below 5-mil for any vessel expected to endure snow. In our experience serving the Greater Toronto Area, 9-mil film delivers the highest level of defense against the freeze-thaw cycles that can cause lighter materials to crack.
In addition to thickness, consider the following when selecting your wrap:
- White Film: This is the best all-around choice for outdoor storage in Ontario. It reflects sunlight to reduce interior heat buildup and provides reliable UV protection for your gelcoat.
- Blue Film: While effective at blocking UV rays, it absorbs more heat, which can increase interior temperatures and accelerate moisture condensation.
- Clear Film: This allows for easy inspection of internal components but offers less UV shielding and tends to degrade faster under direct sunlight.
Using the correct thickness and color ensures a drum-tight, weather-tight barrier that keeps your vessel in peak condition until spring. If you need assistance choosing the right specifications for your boat, Call or Text us for more information or to receive a free custom quote.
