What Paperwork is Needed to Sell a Boat in Ontario?
When you buy or sell a motorized recreational boat in Ontario (specifically those with a motor of 10 hp/7.5 kW or more), completing the vessel transfer of ownership documentation is a mandatory step for Transport Canada compliance.
To ensure a smooth transfer, you must assemble the following paperwork:
- Bill of Sale: A signed and dated document that includes the buyer and seller’s names, the sale price, the date, and the vessel’s make, model, year, and Hull Identification Number (HIN).
- Current Pleasure Craft Licence: The seller must provide the existing 10-digit licence number.
- Transfer Application: A completed Transport Canada transfer form signed by both the buyer and the seller.
- Valid Identification: Government-issued photo ID for the new owner.
It is critical to notify Transport Canada within the 15-day window following the sale to avoid administrative penalties. Please note that under the Transport Canada pleasure craft licence 2026 regulations, new licences now follow a 5-year renewal cycle rather than being valid for a lifetime.
Once your paperwork is finalized, we can assist with the physical logistics of your boat. As the most reliable boat transport provider in the GTA, we offer safe and efficient transportation for vessels up to 50 feet, as well as storage and repairs.
