Which Color of Marine Shrink Wrap Film is Best for Outdoor Winter Storage?

For outdoor winter storage in the Greater Toronto Area, white shrink wrap film is our top recommendation. It is the best all-around choice because it reflects sunlight, which dramatically reduces interior heat buildup and provides reliable UV protection to prevent gelcoat fading and cracking.

When choosing a film color, it is important to understand how different options perform under the sun:

  • White Film: Reflects heat and UV rays, keeping the boat cooler and reducing the risk of moisture condensation during the spring thaw.
  • Blue Film: Effectively blocks UV rays but absorbs significantly more heat. This can raise internal temperatures, which often accelerates moisture condensation inside the vessel.
  • Clear Film: Useful if you need to inspect internal components or boat shrink wrap vents without unwrapping, as it allows natural light inside. However, it offers the least UV shielding and tends to degrade faster under direct sunlight.

In addition to color, we recommend using a minimum 7-mil to 9-mil marine-grade film for boats 20 feet and longer. This thickness is essential for resisting heavy snow loads and freeze-thaw cycles common in Ontario. To ensure your boat is fully protected, we also install a vented system to maintain airflow and prevent mold.
